Tesla Wall Connector vs a universal charger
An honest comparison of the Tesla Wall Connector against universal Type 2 and Type 2 chargers — speed, cost, resale and which makes sense for your household.
The short version
If your household is Tesla-only and likely to remain so, the Tesla Wall Connector is cheaper, tidier and slightly faster. If there is any realistic chance of a second, non-Tesla EV in the next few years, a universal charger is the safer buy.
Speed
The Gen 3 Wall Connector does up to 48A. Most quality universal units top out at 40A, though some reach 48A. In practice the difference is roughly 44 versus 37 miles of range per hour — meaningless for overnight charging, occasionally useful for a fast top-up.
Price
The Wall Connector is around AA$420. Comparable universal units run AA$350 to AA$700. Installation labour is identical either way.
The part people underestimate
Resale. A Tesla-only charger is a slight negative when selling a house to a non-Tesla owner, and a slight positive when selling to a Tesla owner. A universal unit with a Type 2 adapter is neutral to positive for everyone. On a AA$400 device this is not decisive, but it is worth ten seconds of thought.
What we would do
Two Teslas and no plans to change: Wall Connector. One Tesla and one other EV, or an uncertain future: universal. We install both at the same labour price and genuinely have no preference.
